About
The Tiscornia Waterbird Count was started in the fall of 2012 to better understand the movements, numbers, and species of waterbirds migrating south through Lake Michigan in the fall. This information is needed to help us better understand population changes in response to increasing threats of offshore and onshore development, botulism outbreaks, pollution levels, and invasive species such as Quagga Mussels.
Before the Tiscornia Waterbird Count, there was no daily standardized waterbird count was being conducted on Lake Michigan.
Running from August 20th through November 30th over 224,000 waterbirds have been recorded in the first three years of the count, with annual season totals between 65,000-85,000 individuals of 90+ species of waterbirds. Of special note are three year totals of: Blue-winged Teal (23,260), Scaup (75,128), Common Loon (1,988), Common Tern (10,425) and Black Tern (1,208).
Funding for the Tiscornia Waterbird Count is primarily through donations and grants, as such we are always open and happy to receive monetary contributions of any amount.
